Hello there 👋
Welcome to this week's edition of the Breve - the only newsletter you need if you want to have product and growth insights plus exciting tech news in one place.
Developers are increasingly turning to AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Copilot rather than Stack Overflow to write better codes. Stack Overflow is an online community for developers to ask questions and get answers to their coding challenges.
When a software dev encounters a challenge, the common practice is to google the error message. When they do, Stack Overflow is likely the first website Google will display, because of its vast resources.
But things are beginning to change. Since the launch of ChatGPT, developers found that it was useful for writing lines of code, with a simple text prompt.
The traffic to Stack Overflow was down 13.9% in March year-on-year, according to the data from Similarweb. The traffic to chat.openai.com has gone through the roof, while the GitHub website, which has Copilot has seen a 26.4% growth in traffic, year-on-year. While all the traffic to chat.openai.com are not code-related, there are anecdotal evidences that developers are using AI chatbots more.
Notably, Stack Overflow has a community advantage over ChatGPT. On Stack Overflow, community members can posts different answers, debate and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each answer and vote for the best answers.
But on ChatGPT, developers using it will miss out on the debate and the chance to learn multiple ways to approach the same problem. However, using ChatGPT is quicker and more efficient. Even with the concerns around the accuracy of the answers provided by ChatGPT, developers can still tweak the responses into a working solution.
In other news, OpenAI has released an official iOS app for users to access its popular ChatGPT chatbox on the go. It also integrates Whisper, an open-source speech-recognition system, to enable voice input. This new product release has two broad implications for iOS users:
Chat GPT is likely to take over Siri. Siri still sucks. Siri can’t compete with ChatGPT because it was built around a massive database of words. So if a user says a word that is not in the database, Siri does not know how to respond. This opens up an opportunity for ChatGPT to take over Siri as a mobile voice assistant.
Traffic to Google might drop further. This launch could also impact Google. Google is the default search engine on Safari. In the last few months, we have seen people, including developers turn to ChatGPT to get answers to questions they would typically ask Google. A mobile ChatGPT increases the threat to Google search.
Last two weeks, I wrote about how ChatGPT is throttling the acquisition growth at Chegg, the edtech platform. The impact of generative AI will be heavily felt in knowledge and information products. Interesting times ahead.
